Pull Station Mounting Height and Placement Rules

Pull station height, exit distance, and travel distance rules under NFPA 72 and ADA, plus the dual action question and why inspectors flag it so often.

Failed a final on a daycare retrofit a while back over four pull stations. Not wiring, not the panel programming, just height. Measured from the finished floor after the flooring guys put down a thicker rubber tile than the drawings showed, and every station in the building came in low. Half an inch under 48. The inspector didn't even pull out a level, just a tape measure and a flat look.

That's the thing about pull stations. The rules aren't complicated. Getting them right on a real job, after trades stack on top of each other, is where it goes sideways.

The height range

Operable part of the pull station has to land between 42 inches and 48 inches above finished floor. Not the box, the operable part, which matters on some older double action stations where the handle sits below the housing. NFPA 72 and the ADA accessibility guidelines agree on this range so you don't have separate numbers to juggle, but "finished floor" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. If the flooring hasn't gone in yet when you're roughing in boxes, guess low. A quarter inch of extra tile thickness has failed more inspections than bad wiring ever has, in my experience anyway.

Some AHJs will let you sit at 48 flat and call it good. Others want you comfortably under, like 46 to 47, so nobody argues about tolerance later. I usually rough in around 46 inches to center myself in the range and give some cushion either direction. Not a code requirement, just a habit that's saved me a callback or two.

Distance from the exit

Within 5 feet of each exit door, measured along the path of travel, not as the crow flies. That's the rule most people know. What trips people up is "each exit," plural. A room with two exit doors on opposite walls needs a station near both, not one station roughly in the middle that's technically within 5 feet of neither.

Corridors get their own layer on top of that: travel distance to the nearest pull station can't exceed 200 feet, so on a long hallway you're placing intermediate stations even if there's no door nearby. I've seen designers miss this on strip malls with a single long back hallway connecting multiple tenant spaces. Looks fine on the exit door count, fails on travel distance the first time someone walks it with a wheel.

A real spacing example

Here's a set of numbers off a job I did last year, anonymized but the shape is real. Single story retail building, one main entrance, one rear exit, connecting corridor about 260 feet end to end.

Without that midpoint station, the far end of the corridor would've been about 190 feet from the nearest pull station, close enough to the 200 foot cap that the reviewer flagged it on the first submittal anyway and asked for a margin. Adding one station at the midpoint solved it and gave breathing room instead of running right up against the number.

Dual action, and the question that comes up every time

People ask if pull stations need to be dual action, meaning lift the cover then pull, versus a single motion. There isn't a blanket answer. It's mostly a jurisdiction and use group call, sometimes an owner preference to cut down on false pulls in places like schools where kids treat the hallway like a dare. Some AHJs default to single action because that's what the general public expects to work with zero instruction in an actual emergency. Others push dual action specifically to reduce nuisance activations. I've worked both in the same county depending on occupancy type, so I don't treat this as settled and I'd tell you to check with your AHJ before you spec it, not guess.

What actually fails at inspection

Height is the most common one, and it's rarely the design that's wrong, it's the finished floor moving after rough in. Second most common is the exit count problem above, one station serving a room with two required exits. Third, and this one's sneaky, is a station that reads fine on paper but ends up behind a door swing or partially blocked by a rack or a vending machine that got added after the drawings were approved. Code doesn't have a specific clearance number for that in most editions, it's read under general accessibility and unobstructed operation language, so an inspector's judgment call carries real weight there. Walk the finished space before your final, not just the plan set.
