What NFPA 10 Actually Requires on a Fire Extinguisher Service Tag

The service tag, the verification-of-service collar, the 6-year internal label, and the hydro test label — what each record must say under NFPA 10, and which service gets which.

The paper tag wired to an extinguisher's neck looks like a formality. It isn't — it's the legal record an AHJ reads first, and NFPA 10 is specific about what has to be on it. It's also not the only record: depending on the service performed, a single extinguisher can end up carrying a tag, a collar, an adhesive internal-maintenance label, and a hydro label, each with its own required content.

When we built the tag-printing side of FireDeck's extinguisher module, I went through the standard line by line to make sure the printed output actually satisfies it, because "the inspection report needs to be specific — it's in code what goes on them." Here's the breakdown.

The annual maintenance tag

After annual maintenance (NFPA 10 §7.3), the unit gets a tag or label recording, at minimum:

That's the floor. States and jurisdictions commonly add requirements on top — a license number for the servicing firm is typical, and many states require their own tag format or a state stamp. Your state fire marshal's rules ride on top of NFPA 10, not instead of it.

Practical notes that keep tags defensible:

Monthly inspection records

Monthly checks (§7.2) need a record too, but the standard is lighter here: the month and year of the inspection and the initials of the person who did it, recorded on the tag or in a file. Most service companies use the grid of punch-boxes on the back of the annual tag; building staff doing their own monthlies often keep a log instead. Either satisfies the standard — what doesn't is nothing at all, which is the most common finding on a fire marshal walk-through.

The verification-of-service collar

This is the one that separates companies that know the standard from companies that own a tag punch. Whenever an extinguisher is subjected to internal maintenance or recharge, NFPA 10 requires a verification-of-service collar around the neck of the cylinder — a ring that can only be installed when the valve has actually been removed. It records the month and year the service was performed and identifies the servicing agency.

The collar exists because a paper tag can claim anything. The collar physically proves the cylinder was opened. Two consequences:

The 6-year internal maintenance label

When a stored-pressure unit gets its 6-year internal examination, the record is a durable weatherproof label, at least approximately 2 in. × 3.5 in., affixed to the shell — not just a line on the paper tag. It carries the servicing agency's name and address and identifies the month and year the internal maintenance was done. The previous 6-year label comes off when a new one goes on (and a hydro test removes it too, since the hydro supersedes it).

The hydrostatic test label

After a passing hydro (§8.7), low-pressure cylinders get their own record — again a durable label affixed to the shell — showing:

The test pressure is the piece unique to this label, and it's why a hydro record that just says "hydro done 6/2026" is incomplete. High-pressure cylinders (CO2) are different: they're stamped/marked per DOT requirements rather than labeled.

Where the paper tag is heading

The tag format is prescribed, but nothing says the record has to stop at paper. The approach we took in FireDeck: the printed tag carries everything above, plus a QR code that opens that specific unit's full, live service history — every clock, every past service, any open deficiencies — on a public read-only page. A fire marshal scans the tag and sees the whole record instead of one punched date, and the building owner gets the same view without calling anyone.

The paper tag satisfies the code. The history behind it is what actually proves the program is being run — and that's the part worth systematizing.
